DOGON COUNTRY – Bandiagara Escarpement, Mali

Dogon Country is a culturally rich, semi-arid region in eastern Mali, famous for villages spectacularly carved along the 500-meter-tall Bandiagara Escarpment. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dogon people are renowned worldwide for their intricate wooden sculptures, animist traditions, and mask dances.

Villages are built from mud and logs. They feature characteristic thatched-roof granaries and the Togu-na—open-sided shelters with nine pillars where village elders gather to debate and resolve conflicts. High up in the cliff-faces are remnants of homes built by the Telem, a pre-Dogon population that inhabited the region.

The Dogon people fled to this isolated, rocky terrain between the 10th and 13th centuries to avoid forced conversion to Islam, allowing them to preserve their ancient, unique language and belief systems. Their cosmology famously involves complex astronomical knowledge, particularly regarding the star Sirius. The most significant ceremonial event is the Dama, a rare and elaborate mask festival held to honor deceased elders and guide them into the spiritual realm.
