GLOBAL GATHERING – Prayagraj, India
The Kumbh Mela is an epic pilgrimage for Hindus, held on the banks of India’s sacred rivers. This holy gathering occurs when the sun, moon, and Jupiter align in a particular astrological configuration. As per Hindu mythology, during the sagar manthan or churning of the ocean of milk by gods and demons, a fierce battle erupted over the amrit (nectar of immortality). In this cosmic struggle, precious drops of this divine elixir rained down upon four sacred sites across India: Nashik, Ujjain, Haridwar and Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad).
From January 13 to February 26 2025, over 600 million people gathered at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh to witness a cosmic convergence of faith and festivity. This was the greatest human gathering on earth, a colossal event that captured the imagination of the world. It marked a rare convergence of celestial alignments, making it a once-in-144-year event.
Kumbh Mela is held at these hallowed grounds, where rivers meet and millions converge, seeking solace and salvation. The location rotates between the sacred towns of Nashik (on the banks of the Godavari), Ujjain (on the banks of the Shipra), Haridwar (on the banks of the Ganga), and Prayagraj (at the Triveni Sangam, or the confluence of the holiest rivers, the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati). It is believed that a dip in these sacred rivers washes away the grime of countless lifetimes, breaking the chains of karma and offering moksha, the ultimate liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
